Cultivating Communities aims to establish a network of locally-based cohorts of congregations across North America. The local emphasis of our cohorts offers participating churches the opportunity to:

  • Deepen relationships with nearby congregations

  • Have conversations with congregations who understand the opportunities and challenges of their place

  • Spend time in the neighborhoods of other congregations in the cohort

  • Imagine possibilities of inter-church collaboration beyond the scope of this project

Our first 2 cohorts, located on Chicago’s westside and in East Tennessee, launched in 2022. Other cohorts will launch over the next few years.

The Learning Journey

A cohort will travel together on a 3-year learning journey. (Timeline is approximate).

This learning journey will enable congregations to thrive by:

  1. Understanding and drawing upon their unique contexts and gifts,

  2. Developing practices for discerning God’s movement among their members and in the world, and

  3. Helping congregations develop the habits, skills, and capacities to engage in processes of deep community formation amid our current and emerging cultural challenges.
